Complex Minimalism

I define my paintings as “Complex Minimalism”. It reflects the intersection of two contrasting expressions — abstract expressionism … complex, filled with intensity, richness and story; and minimalism … clear, focused and at peace.

In my backgrounds, I use abstract expressionism techniques of unconstrained movements and ideas. I experiment with colors, varying brush strokes, scrapes, fortuitous movements, and multiple layers of rich colors and textures to create intricate, woven, complex foundations.

Emerging from the complexity, my foregrounds are simple and minimal markings that focus on the basic elements of art — line, shape, space, and the relationship these elements have with each other. The foregrounds are a simple breath in that moment, and are inspired by Zen Brush Painting … an ancient calligraphic art form that beautifully channels true creativity through “Mu-shin” — a “no mind” meditative state beyond thought, emotions and expectations. To deepen this state of being, often included in my foregrounds are “Enso” circles (also used in Zen Brush Painting) to symbolize infinity, the absolute, the true nature of existence, and enlightenment.

Contrast is an essential aspect of my work, and it gives both life and peace to my paintings. The two approaches I use — abstract expressionism and minimalism, echoed in my background / foreground relationship — are balanced and centered, resulting in a powerful but harmonious, ethereal, complex work of art.
